This was a topic in chapter 13 regarding senior abuse which comes in many forms. Employee/health care workers responsibilities and corporate responsibilities. For example, of Mickey Rooney’s story of being abused by his family member who withheld food, medication, and fraud by meddling with his finance. Not providing a person or loved one with adequate food, shelter and hygiene and physical and psychological harm is all considered abuse. 10% of Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some form of abuse. Unfortunately, people see the elderly as frail, naïve and not up with the new technology leading to them being taken advantage of. Healthcare workers have a duty to report such abuse and the abusers to management and the state. Workers that are caring for an elderly individual they have a duty to provide quality patient care without intimidation or rhetoric. Far too many times patients do not get incontinent care or a bath, but documentation says otherwise but the patient is losing weight and having other complications with skin impairment.
This article I read about talks about how the pandemic affected the elderly due to the rise and spread of covid causing a major effect on staffing in healthcare. In this article a woman’s mother continued to decline during the pandemic and wasn’t eating and seemed more tired than usual during video chats. The patient was transported to the hospital per families request and it turn out that she had a bedsore, and it was infected with Staph. The patient later died from dehydration and sepsis. The facility neglected this woman the nursing staff and cna’s of the facility and managers. These people over see the care of patients and are supposed to report any change in a client’s condition to md and family. They violate breach of duty, Duty to do no harm, duty to hire competent Staffing. The staff violated their duty to report any abuse or neglect of a patient to the proper authorities even if it means the state. The staff violated this woman’s patient rights to safe environment without intimidation, abuse of any kind physical, mental and the right to refuse any treatment. The pandemic revealed a lot of gaps that are in the healthcare system and will continue to be an ongoing is issue due to the new technology we have that helps cure diseases and allow people to live longer lives. For this reason, the need for more nursing homes and elderly care will continue to rise. by 2030, 20 percent of the US population will be over 65, and the number of 85-year-olds and 100-year-olds will double or triple and between 2015 and 2065, the National Center for Health Statistics expects the number of older people with physical or cognitive disabilities to grow by almost 150%, from 6.3 million to 15.7 million. Corporations have the responsibilities to provided on going education for staff and making sure they hire individuals who are competent in their skills to provide safe care in their facilities. To avoid burn out and negligence companies need to ensure that they have enough staff to client ratio to provide for the elderlies needs.
